Book of John,  Discipleship

#3 John 1:19-34

Leader:  Have your Student write down the Passage and the Questions then they have a week to prepare.

Passage:  John 1:19-34

Question:  1) Who is Jesus?

Then, this week the Student will:

  • Read the Passage every day!
  • Handwrite the Passage
  • Answer the questions

When you do meet again, you will go over this…

John 1:19-34

19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

1) Who is Jesus?

Notes for Leader:

Open your time together with prayer. Be sure to ask the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation and teach what needs to be learned and heard during your discussion. He will give you the words that you need! May you grow closer together and closer to Jesus.

Briefly Review what you learned so far about who Jesus is.  Now, let’s see what else we can discover about who Jesus is…

Yes, this week has the same question. This may seem repetitive, but the entire first chapter of John is about who Jesus is… so let’s soak up all we can. (And get ready, because next week asks the same question, too.)

Understanding who Jesus is, is one of the most important truths anyone can ever know. Jesus claimed to be God, so discovering who Jesus is allows us to get to a point where we either accept or reject his claim!

When we accept that Jesus is God, we can move forward in our relationship with Jesus. This foundational truth draws us into the arms of Jesus and now we can grow in loving Jesus deeply and well!

Here is what we noticed.

v.23 The LORD – Jesus makes straight His path a reference from Isaiah 40:3-11 which foretells of Jesus.

v. 26 Jesus comes after John

v.27 Jesus is greater than John

v. 29 Jesus is the “Lamb of God” – he takes away the sins of the world

What does the “Lamb of God” mean? According to the Law – Leviticus 5:1-6, any time someone sins unknowingly and then realizes it, they must make an atonement for their sin by sacrificing a lamb.  And in Leviticus 17:11 we learn that blood makes atonement, blood = life. Also, we see an example of this in Exodus 12 when the Angel of Death passed over God’s chosen people. (Look these passages up together and read them out loud.)

There are several passages in the Bible that prophesy about Jesus Isaiah 53:4-7 and tell us that he is the Lamb of God 1 Peter 1:18-19.

v. 33 He will baptize with the Holy Spirit — God’s chosen had not yet encountered the Holy Spirit, they knew of him, but he did not come into the world to live in all believers until after Jesus ascended into heaven. In Acts 2:1-4, the Holy Spirit came to live in believers! They knew from the Old Testament that God will put his spirit in us and move us to follow his decrees and keep his laws (Ezekiel 36: 24-27), but they had not experienced this yet. What a blessing that believers today do have the Spirit living inside us now!

v. 34 Jesus is God’s Chosen One

**Jesus=LORD

**Jesus=one who comes after John

**Jesus=greater than John

**Jesus=baptizes with the Holy Spirit

**Jesus=the Lamb of God

**Jesus=God’s Chosen One

Enjoy the conversation!

Now, look ahead to next week’s study and give your student the next passage and questions to prepare this coming week.
