Passage: John 6:41-47
Questions:
- 1) What does Jesus say about people?
- 2) What does Jesus say he will do?
- 3) What questions do you have?
Then, this week the Student will:
- Read the Passage every day!
- Handwrite the Passage
- Answer the questions
When you do meet again, you will go over this…
John 6:41-47
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
Notes for Leader:
Open your time together with prayer. Be sure to ask the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation and teach what needs to be learned and heard during your discussion. He will give you the words that you need! May you grow closer together and closer to Jesus.
Briefly review what you learned last week. Now, let’s see what else we can discover about who Jesus is…
1) What does Jesus say about people?
v44 No one can come to me unless the Father… Draws him
- Our ability to even know God is dependent on Him
- Since He draws us it is not our works or will that move us into his love
v45 Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him… comes to me (Jesus)
- Being in the Word and learning brings us closer to God
v47 He who believes… has eternal life.
Please note: Jesus makes this statement (v44) in response to the people’s grumbling. It is not about their thinking, their understanding, their will… it is only by God’s perfect (sovereign), undeserved grace that anyone is drawn to Jesus.
2) What does Jesus say he will do?
v37 and v39 – Tell us that God will not lose anyone
v37 and v39 and v44 – Tell us that Jesus will raise all who have come to Him on the last day
v46 Since Jesus is the only one to see God, He is the best to reveal God
**Jesus is on our side! He wants us to know God and He wants to help us come to God.
3) What questions do you have?
Don’t be nervous about this one… the Holy Spirit will help you answer. If you are discipling a young child (and most others!), remember that they are not expecting a doctoral dissertation when you answer, so keep it simple and true. And, it is ok to say, “I am not sure, let’s look into that together.” And then add that question to your study for next week.
Allow the Spirit to lead a great conversation!
***Here is the passage and questions for next week’s study. Give your student the week to write out the passage and prepare for your discussion.
