John 6:32-40
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
Notes for Leader:
Open your time together with prayer. Be sure to ask the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation and teach what needs to be learned and heard during your discussion. He will give you the words that you need! May you grow closer together and closer to Jesus.
Briefly review what you learned last week. Now, let’s see what else we can discover about who Jesus is…
1) Explain verses 32-37 and answer: How does Jesus describe himself?
v32 true bread from heaven – Luke 22 at the last supper Jesus teaches that the bread = His body
v33 bread of God
v35 I am the bread of life
Manna in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, the people give Moses the credit for the Manna and Jesus reminds them that the manna is from God, only God can give the bread that gives life to the world. God has now sent Jesus, the bread of life, to the world and this bread will satisfy their souls.
In that time, bread was a main staple, you could not live without it. Likewise, you cannot live in the presence of our Holy God without Jesus.
2) Why has Jesus come?
v38 to do the will of Him who sent me – which is God
v39 and that will is… lose none of those given me – Jesus came to save those that the Lord has given him
3) What is the Father’s will for Jesus?
v35 satisfied and never hungry
v40 everyone who looks to the son will have eternal life
Many of the Jews are satisfied with their laws and are seeking Jesus for their physical needs, actual bread and healing. Unfortunately, they are missing the fact that they have spiritual needs and instead of seeking salvation they only want to be fed. Jesus says that he will satisfy everyone that comes to him and believes in him, unfortunately, they do not believe in him.
People have a choice to believe. Many reject Jesus because they love sin and darkness as we saw in 3:19-21. People without Christ are spiritually dead, Eph 2:1-3 and cannot understand spiritual truth, 1 Cor 2:14.
Jesus’ goal is to save the lost. If that is His goal, should it be ours as well?
With this question in mind, read and discuss Ephesians 2:10 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
4) What questions do you have?
Don’t be nervous about this one… the Holy Spirit will help you answer. If you are discipling a young child (and most others!), remember that they are not expecting a doctoral dissertation when you answer, so keep it simple and true. And, it is ok to say, “I am not sure, let’s look into that together.” And then add that question to your study for next week.
Allow the Spirit to lead a great conversation!
***Here is the passage and questions for next week’s study. Give your student the week to write out the passage and prepare for your discussion.
