When you do meet again, you will go over this…
John 5:24-30
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
Notes for Leader:
Open your time together with prayer. Be sure to ask the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation and teach what needs to be learned and heard during your discussion. He will give you the words that you need! May you grow closer together and closer to Jesus.
Briefly review what you learned last week. Now, let’s see what else we can discover about who Jesus is…
Here is what we noticed.
1) Explain verse 24.
v.24 is a summary of salvation = whoever hears and believes (faith) has eternal life, they are forgiven (no condemnation) and this new life means they have avoided death (which we all deserve!)
2) What is Jesus talking about in regards to death, life and judging?
v.25 a time will come when there is the final judgment – the dead will hear the voice of Jesus and rise
v.26 life only comes from and through Jesus
v.27 Jesus (who is the Son of Man, lived a man’s life, understands all mankind) will judge all men (see v.24)
v.28-29 All the dead will come before Jesus to be judged. The good will rise to life; the evil will be eternally condemned. Salvation is a gift to those who believe, but judgment is based on works. Our faith justifies us before God, but our confidence rests in God’s mercy as he looks on those that believe and sees the blood of his perfect son.
v.30 Jesus’ judgment is to please the Father
3) What questions do you have?
Don’t be nervous about this one… the Holy Spirit will help you answer. If you are discipling a young child (and most others!), remember that they are not expecting a doctoral dissertation when you answer, so keep it simple and true. And, it is ok to say, “I am not sure, let’s look into that together.” And then add that question to your study for next week.
Allow the Spirit to lead a great conversation!
Here is the passage and questions for next week’s study. Give your student the week to write out the passage and prepare for your discussion.
Passage: John 5:31-47
Questions:
- 1) Identify the 4 testimonies that say Jesus is from God and explain each.
- 2) What questions do you have?
