When you do meet again, you will go over this…
John 2:1-11
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Notes for Leader:
Open your time together with prayer. Be sure to ask the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation and teach what needs to be learned and heard during your discussion. He will give you the words that you need!
May you grow closer together and closer to Jesus.
Briefly review what you learned about who Jesus is. Now, let’s see what else we can discover about who Jesus is…
Here is what we noticed.
1) What does Jesus show about himself?
v.1 He did normal things — Jesus went to a wedding
v.4 He has a “time” — which has not yet come
v.8 He did a miracle — Jesus has power
v.10 Jesus exceeds expectations – the wine is amazing!
2) What does Jesus’ first miracle show about who He is?
v.6 ceremonial washing jars
v.8 filled with wine (symbol of blood)
Jesus uses ceremonial washing jars… for cleansing oneself, they were used for purification that the Law required – this is prophesying what is to come, Jesus will be the blood sacrifice to wash clean his people forever and fulfill the Law. This miracle is foretelling why Jesus came.
3) What questions do you have?
Don’t be nervous about this one… the Holy Spirit will help you answer. If you are discipling a young child (and most others!), remember that they are not expecting a doctoral dissertation when you answer, so keep it simple and true. And, it is ok to say, “I am not sure, let’s look into that together.” And then add that question to your study for next week.
Enjoy the conversation!
Now, look ahead to next week’s study and give your student the next passage and questions to prepare this coming week.
